1984 Baseplates 30 Years Later

The 1984 Baseplate was used far longer than any other District of Columbia license plate. Most of the Capital City plates shown on various pages throughout DCplates.net were used only for short periods and are therefore in nice condition (such as no. 045-654). Here, however, we show passenger and non-passenger plates used for more than two decades, some showing extreme evidence of prolonged exposure to the elements. Passenger car plates of this base were ultimately replaced 37 years and seven months after the first ones were issued. Fortunately we have preserved on this page how a few of them appeared after 30 years of use on the streets and highways of A Capital City.

1972 or 1973 Citroen SM

It's difficult to imagine a more unusual vehicle in the District still sporting Capital City plates than this Citroen SM. Although this model lasted from 1970 to 1975, only 2,400 were imported to the North American market, for 1972 and 1973. The SM was Motor Trend's Car of the Year for 1972, at the time an honor unheard of for an import.

In instances such as this in which the vehicle is older than the year of issue of its license plates, we have no way of knowing whether the plates have been displayed on a single car since they were issued. These plates were likely issued in 1985, twenty-five years before these photos were taken.
